Tour Description

Driving south on the highway from Belgrade will eventually get you to an entire parallel universe, city with immensely rich and complex history, deep religious and cultural heritage and dynamic everyday life. It is a place where Roman Emperor Constantine the Great was born, a ruler who proclaimed religious tolerance and later converted to Christianity (he also founded Istanbul, largest city in Turkey). It is also a place where many historical battles have been waged, including the one in 1809 which is remembered by bravery of Stevan Sindjelić and a unique monument – a scull tower made from Serbian fighters’ sculls. Niš stayed under Ottoman rule until 1878 and that is why there is so much oriental influence in architecture and everyday life even today. Local mentality and life perspective are completely unique and can hardly be described by words. Historical characters such are King Milan Obrenović and famous local trader Kalča have divine status, as do some of the local football and music legends. Merak is the local way of living, which can be roughly translated as slow, easygoing and hedonist life. Locals are very passionate and open people, kafanas (taverns, inns) work non-stop, it is a place of low prices and excellent meals – in one word a gourmand’s paradise!
