Tour Description

Belgrade is today capital of Serbia but it was, just until 1990s, also the capital of Yugoslavia, much bigger and more important country. Both the Serbs and most of the neighboring nations consider the period of Yugoslavia under communist rule to be some kind of golden age in their national histories. The story is, of course, much more complex and interesting, and it includes political repression, propaganda, switching periods of fast economic growth and crisis, unique political and artistic liberties in the socialist bloc and a bloody civil war which ended this controversial country. Yugoslav communism (or, more precisely said – socialism) was focused on two main objects – Tito as the supreme leader and genius, and ordinary working man/women, projected to be the greatest beneficiary of communist political and economic experiments. This tour is designed to introduce you to Tito, his personality cult, Non-alignment movement and the huge international respect and influence Yugoslavia had in the 1945–1990 period. Also, this tour introduce you to the everyday life in socialist Yugoslavia, liberties and restrictions imposed on ordinary people, the way working class entertained itself, film noir, western influenced pop culture, traveling around the world without passport, high-class education and healthcare provided free of charge, immense growth of the cities and huge construction projects to house millions of new-comers. Our guides are university educated historians versed in 20th Century history and will lead you in this short time-travel adventure, answering all your questions and helping you understand the complex political and cultural heritage of the Balkans.
